Evolution from Theoretical Physics to Sustainable Space Leadership
Sabrina’s path into space, defence, and sustainability was shaped not by design, but by ambition and a desire to create positive change. From a young age, she was curious about how the world works, which naturally led her to explore global challenges. “It was during my teenage years that I had an unwritten desire to work with science and maths to find solutions to real world problems,” shares Sabrina. Studying Theoretical Physics broadened her perspective and introduced her to the space sector. Driven to learn, she pursued internships and roles in teaching, analytics, and project management, gaining skills and clarity on how best to contribute meaningfully to the world.
With a strong passion for space and science, Sabrina was awarded a joint scholarship from the UK and European Space Agencies to pursue a Master’s in Space Science at the International Space University. Early into her studies, she knew space and defence was her calling. She began her career at NASA Goddard, followed by roles at the European Space Agency and SES Satellites in Luxembourg. Embracing roles in Engineering, Strategy, and Finance, Sabrina brought curiosity and fresh perspectives. She soon recognized sustainability’s broader scope and saw how her passion, background, and experience could intersect to drive meaningful global impact.
Firm in her commitment to sustainability within Space and Defence, Sabrina Alam pursued an MBA from the University of London and gained multiple sustainability accreditations. She went on to establish and lead the sustainability department at SES, delivering projects across space sustainability, environmental impact, social equity, and human rights. These experiences deepened her passion to collaborate across public and private sectors. Recognising consulting as the ideal space to drive impact at this intersection, she thrives in multi-stakeholder environments. Passion-driven with strong values, Sabrina actively lectures, mentors, and contributes to various committees—ensuring her professional principles are reflected in her personal life.

She regularly teaches at institutions including the International Space University, EIIS, Leiden University, and EPFL, and speaks globally on sustainability in space and defence. Sabrina Alam also serves on the IAF Project/Program Management Committee and the IAF Sustainability Task Force, among other roles.
Aligning Sustainability and Security for Long-Term Success in Space and Defence
Sabrina views sustainability and security as inherently connected within Space and Defence strategy. Regardless of an organisation’s goals, long-term success depends on resilience and future-proofing—areas where these principles play a critical role. Sabrina mentions, “I enjoy working in the domains and bridging these concepts together to ensure that overall success objectives are met.”
Sabrina advocates for holistic planning that considers short-, mid-, and long-term trends, risks, opportunities, and demographic shifts. She believes sustainability and security must be integrated into strategy from the outset—not treated as afterthoughts. This forward-thinking approach drives innovation, supports economic sustainability, and ensures the ongoing growth of the Space and Defence sectors.
Insight into Europe’s Space and Defence Surge
Over the past year, the EU has committed significant investment to the Space and Defence sectors, creating more funding opportunities for organisations of all sizes. Efforts to expand the talent pool and discussions on dual-use technologies are intensifying. Meanwhile, regulation and standardisation across the industry are increasing, with strong alignment between space, defence, sustainability, and other sectors.
Given the geopolitical context and the EU’s priorities for the next decade, this momentum is set to continue. Sabrina is excited to bring her experience and perspective to this evolving landscape, contributing to future-shaping projects, discussions, and decisions across space and defence.
Roadmap for Europe’s Space and Defence
Europe faces unique challenges and opportunities in building a resilient, sustainable future in Space and Defence. Sabrina highlights Europe’s advantage in its diverse ecosystem of private players, organisations, and individuals eager to collaborate. She stresses the importance of strong stakeholder engagement, expanded public-private partnerships, and inclusive platforms where policymakers and industry can align priorities.
A key challenge is Europe’s extensive decision-making process, requiring consensus among member states, which can delay action. With rapid technological advances, shifting geopolitics, growing global investment, and complex value chains, timely decision-making is critical. Sabrina believes Europe must secure the right skills, investment, and resources while upholding values and regulations to keep pace and ensure sustainable growth in these sectors.
Dedication to Equity in the Aerospace Sector
Sabrina’s journey as a young woman of ethnic origin from a small town in East London, UK, has presented both barriers and opportunities. The limited representation and role models in her environment posed challenges, yet she was fortunate to have unwavering support from family and friends who believed in her and encouraged her at every stage. Despite facing obstacles such as bias, micro- and macroaggressions, financial difficulties, and demographic setbacks, Sabrina acknowledges the invaluable support from mentors and allies who provided opportunities, guidance, and the confidence to pursue her ambitions.
Mentorship has been a cornerstone of Sabrina’s growth. Sabrina points out, “at every stage of my life, I recall a specific person, whether in the form of a family member, friend, teacher, who has uplifted me and acted as a Mentor.” Passionate about empowering women and minorities within Space and Defence, she regularly mentors and engages with related communities.
Her involvement includes roles with the UNOOSA Space4Women programme, the IAF Young Professionals Programme as a long-term mentor, and founding the Women in Aerospace Europe Luxembourg chapter. She is also a member of the EU Commission’s DIVERIS network and a facilitator for the #IamRemarkable initiative, delivering training on unconscious bias and confidence-building. Sabrina is a dedicated advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion, integrating these values into her professional work, teaching, and community engagement.
Sabrina on Equal Opportunity and Active Listening
Sabrina emphasizes the importance of addressing inclusivity by focusing on opportunities, access, and acknowledging that individuals often start from different life circumstances. These differences can lead to biases and stereotypes and recognizing this is a critical first step toward fostering truly inclusive teams and valuing diverse perspectives.
As a leader, Sabrina believes in providing equal opportunities and creating platforms where everyone feels empowered to speak and be heard, regardless of rank, background, or other attributes. She stresses that diverse perspectives are essential for delivering high-quality work and cultivating positive team dynamics that benefit both internal culture and external outcomes.
Inclusivity, for Sabrina, is foundational to making team members feel valued and a sense of belonging. She advocates for regular check-ins, retrospectives, brainstorming sessions, and, most importantly, actively listening to team input and following through on agreed actions to build trust and approachability in leadership.
Balancing Leadership and Life
The Space and Defence industry in the EU is rapidly evolving, making it essential to grow and contribute actively to key discussions and decisions. Sabrina is committed to advancing innovative projects and strengthening relationships through a holistic, sustainability-focused approach.
