Background
Meta has introduced a new mobile tool designed to help Facebook creators protect their original reels from being copied or reposted without permission. Called Facebook content protection, the feature alerts creators when their videos appear on other accounts and gives them options to manage how those copies are handled.
The tool enables creators to hide duplicated reels on both Facebook and Instagram, monitor the performance of reposted videos, and include attribution links that mark them as “original,” guiding viewers back to the creator’s profile or page. Creators can also release their claim if they choose to let the repost stay online.
Meta says the feature is part of its broader effort to help original creators stand out. Earlier in July, the company reported taking down about 10 million fake profiles impersonating major creators and acting against 500,000 accounts involved in spam or fake engagement.
The new system also protects reels shared from Instagram, but only if creators post them to Facebook directly or use the platform’s “Share to Facebook” cross-posting option. Meta expects this may encourage more creators to publish their content on Facebook.
Access is being rolled out to creators enrolled in Facebook’s Content Monetization program who meet higher integrity and originality standards, as well as those who use Rights Manager. Creators can check their eligibility through notifications, their Professional Dashboard, or by applying on Facebook’s website.
The tool uses the same matching technology as Rights Manager, showing percentage match, views, follower count, and monetization status. Creators can also add approved accounts to an “allow list” to prevent false flags.
While creators can block copied reels, Meta says offenders will not be penalized to avoid misuse. The company also warns that creators who submit false claims may lose access to the tool. Currently, the tool is available only on mobile, though desktop integration is being tested.
