Background :

Netflix on Tuesday said it will redesign its mobile app as it competes more directly with social platforms such as YouTube, TikTok and Instagram for viewer attention. The announcement came during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, where executives outlined plans to make Netflix more engaging on a daily basis.

The redesigned mobile app is expected to launch later in 2026. Co-CEO Greg Peters said the update will support the company’s long-term growth and allow teams to continuously test and improve features. He described the new app as a base for experimentation rather than a one-time change.

A major part of the redesign will be the deeper use of vertical, swipe-style video feeds. Netflix has been testing short clips from its shows and films since May. These clips appear in a format similar to TikTok and Instagram Reels, making it easier for users to discover content quickly. Peters said Netflix could expand this feature to include clips from new formats such as video podcasts.

Netflix is also stepping up its push into video podcasts, an area long dominated by YouTube. The company recently launched its first original video podcasts, hosted by well-known figures like Pete Davidson and Michael Irvin. Netflix has teamed up with Spotify and iHeartMedia to bring popular video podcasts to its platform.

Company leaders said the goal is to improve content discovery and make Netflix feel more interactive on mobile devices. CTO Elizabeth Stone has stressed that Netflix is not trying to copy social apps but is adapting mobile-first ideas to strengthen entertainment discovery.

Co-CEO Ted Sarandos said streaming services now compete with the entire entertainment industry, not just each other. He noted that platforms across film, sports and social media now fight for the same viewers.

In 2025, Netflix reported $45.2 billion in revenue, with ad income crossing $1.5 billion. The company also ended the year with more than 325 million paid subscribers.
