- Rival Lovable relies on external AI models and reported $500 million in annualised revenue earlier this month.
Background
Base44, the vibe coding platform acquired by Wix for $80 million roughly a year ago, has begun rolling out its own AI model, Base1, marking a significant shift in how the company plans to compete in a fast-moving market.
The model was trained on data generated from tens of millions of real user interactions on the platform. Founder Maor Shlomo said owning the model within the company’s full technology stack opens up greater control over speed, cost, and efficiency, advantages that relying on external models cannot easily provide.
Base44 hopes Base1 will eventually outperform frontier models for app creation tasks. Shlomo argued that general-purpose models will remain broad in their capabilities, giving specialised platforms room to outperform them in specific use cases. He said the goal is a model better aligned to what users want, faster to run, and cheaper than frontier alternatives.
The move positions Base44 against rivals such as Swedish startup Lovable, which relies on external models and reported $500 million in annualised revenue earlier this month. Base44 passed $100 million in annual recurring revenue a few months ago.
However, competition is intensifying beyond vibe coding startups. Frontier AI labs are moving closer to Base44’s territory, with Claude Code emerging as a vibe coding player and Cursor now under SpaceX ownership alongside xAI.
Investors point out that AI defensibility now requires having control of distribution, data, and infrastructure together. The Base44 company is presenting itself as the only vertically integrated vibe coding system to control all three.
The parent company of Base44 recently cut down 20% of its employees, which makes Base44’s increase in staff and sales very important for the company overall.
