Background :

Accrual has agreed to acquire the accounting-firm technology and business of Puzzle, adding its AI-native ledger and month-end close products to its platform. The deal marks a major step in AI-driven accounting, letting Accrual grow from tax preparation into full client accounting services for Top 100 firms.

Accrual is acquiring Puzzle’s accounting-firm division, including its AI-native ledger, AI Close, Cowork and Chat products. Puzzle founder and CEO Sasha Orloff will join Accrual along with other key staff.

The deal aims to connect tax preparation with client accounting services, giving accounting professionals a single intelligence layer built around specific firm processes.

Accrual launched in February 2026 with $75 million in funding and already works with major firms including Armanino, Aprio, H&R Block, Creative Planning, BMSS and Stephano Slack. Puzzle currently serves more than 7,000 startups, small businesses and accounting firms, and Accrual has used Puzzle’s technology for its own internal finances since it started.

The deal is expected to close in the coming weeks, pending standard conditions. Puzzle will keep operating independently for startups and small businesses using its platform directly, while Accrual integrates Puzzle’s ledger and close tools into its own system. Early access to Accrual’s client accounting offering is already available, with a wider rollout planned by the end of 2026.
