Background :

Analog Devices is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire Empower Semiconductor in a deal valued at about $1.5 billion in cash, as chip companies continue to expand their presence in the fast-growing artificial intelligence infrastructure market.

Empower Semiconductor develops power management chips used in AI processors and data centres. The proposed acquisition is expected to strengthen Analog Devices’ position in the semiconductor sector linked to generative AI and high-performance computing.

Industry observers said the deal reflects rising investment in data centre infrastructure as companies increase spending to support artificial intelligence workloads and cloud computing demand. The acquisition would also help Analog Devices expand its technology portfolio in power management solutions for AI systems.

A report said the deal could be announced as early as this week, although both companies have not officially confirmed the development. Requests for comment from the companies did not receive an immediate response.

Based in Wilmington, Massachusetts, Analog Devices supplies semiconductors to several industries, including aerospace, automotive and communications. The company has benefited from growing demand for advanced semiconductor solutions across industrial and technology sectors.

Earlier this year, Analog Devices projected second-quarter results above market estimates, supported by strong semiconductor demand. The company’s shares have also recorded significant gains this year, reflecting investor confidence in businesses linked to AI and data centre growth.

Empower Semiconductor, based in Silicon Valley, is known for manufacturing voltage-regulating chips designed for AI processors and large-scale data centre operations.

Analysts said the proposed acquisition highlights increasing consolidation in the semiconductor industry as companies seek to strengthen their AI capabilities and expand into high-growth technology markets.
