Let’s explore Kyle’s empathetic approach to addressing energy and utilities challenges:

Modernizing Data Use in Energy & Utilities

Kyle feels the world needs energy. Early in his career, he realized the importance of understanding energy systems and global processes. He started as a US diplomat and moved into the Energy and utilities sector because he believed energy improves people’s lives.

Kyle didn’t know that Enterprise Architecture was a career. He was trying to solve big data problems and constantly running against IT capacity constraints. He became an architect to solve his IT problems with data science. Then, he saw how good IT architecture runs data science workflows at scale. Now, he works with the world’s most significant Energy and utilities companies to modernize how they use data to accelerate (and automate) decision making at scale.

Empowering Energy Companies with Innovation

He loves that his role as a technical leader has the dual impact of technology and leadership. On one hand, he leads a team whose innovations empower energy companies to drive sustainability and efficiency.

On the other hand, Kyle focuses on an empathetic leadership style that encourages growth and creativity within the team. It’s incredibly fulfilling for him to design solutions addressing the energy sector’s challenges while building a team of highly skilled professionals who share the same vision.

Finding a Creative Outlet in the Cloud

He got in big trouble for writing a poem in a report to his boss in the State Department. Kyle was bored with the work and was looking for a creative outlet. His boss disapproved and made that very clear. Later, he had a manager who recognized that he was getting restless in his role and challenged him to learn about IT Architecture.

Because of her support and mentorship, he changed his career path and realized that he loves working on big data problems using the cloud. Both managers changed how he leads, but only the second empowered him (and he still gets a Christmas card each year). He sees his role as a leader now as removing the blockers so that the builders and architects on his team can focus on making great things and solving meaningful problems.

Automating Routine Tasks for Innovation

Kyle believes that technology and data are essential for addressing the energy sector’s most pressing challenges. During his time at ExxonMobil, he designed a predictive maintenance system that saved the company millions of dollars annually by reducing downtime and optimizing equipment performance. This experience reinforced his belief in the power of data-driven solutions to drive efficiency and cost savings.

Today, advancements like generative AI are transforming the industry by automating routine tasks, freeing up valuable resources for strategic innovation. AI-powered tools enhance decision-making, streamline operations, and improve predictive capabilities, enabling companies to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving landscape.

Cloud technology further accelerates this transformation by providing scalable, cost-effective solutions that enhance operational efficiency and sustainability. By leveraging the cloud, energy companies can optimize resource management, improve system resilience, and support the transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy practices. For Kyle, the future of the energy sector lies in the intelligent integration of these technologies, unlocking new opportunities for innovation and long-term growth.

Solving Real-World Problems in Academia

A significant part of Kyle’s role at AWS involves educating customers on the latest technologies and guiding his team in building resilient systems. His passion for teaching extends beyond the workplace—at American University, he instructs graduate students on how to analyze and solve real-world challenges.

Teaching at a university keeps Kyle deeply engaged with emerging technology trends. It also offers him a unique window into how different industries approach problem solving. By interacting with students from diverse backgrounds, he gains fresh perspectives that challenge conventional industry thinking.

In fact, it was a student who first introduced him to the concept of prompt engineering as a career in 2022, just months after ChatGPT 2 was released. This moment reinforced his belief that students, unbound by traditional industry constraints, often approach problems with novel insights. Their curiosity and diverse viewpoints serve as a reminder that innovation isn’t limited to seasoned professionals—it thrives wherever people are willing to question, explore, and rethink existing ideas.

Sharing Ideas and Tutorials on Medium

Kyle believes that staying ahead in the rapidly evolving tech landscape requires constant curiosity and hands-on experimentation. He often joked that his job was simply finding compelling data science projects on Twitter and implementing them for his customers. In his view, true innovation rarely comes from entirely new ideas—it more often arises from creatively combining existing concepts and applying new techniques to longstanding challenges across different domains.

To stay engaged with emerging trends, Kyle actively reads and writes on platforms like Medium, where industry professionals share insights, tutorials, and real-world applications of technology. He values the open exchange of ideas, seeing it as a crucial way to refine skills, challenge assumptions, and stay informed about the latest advancements.

Currently, he is exploring the Zig programming language, using projects from Medium as his guide. This hands-on approach allows him to deepen his understanding of new technologies while reinforcing his belief that the best way to learn is by doing. For Kyle, continuous learning isn’t just a necessity—it’s a mindset that fuels innovation and keeps problem-solving exciting.

Embracing Change in Technology and Energy

Kyle emphasizes the importance of adaptability and curiosity in the ever-evolving fields of technology and energy. As industries continue to advance, the tools, methodologies, and mindsets that once drove success may no longer be relevant. Staying ahead requires continuous learning and a willingness to embrace change. He actively encourages young professionals to engage with industry communities such as IEEE and pursue certifications like the Project Management Professional (PMP). These opportunities not only enhance technical knowledge but also foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Immersing oneself in professional networks exposes individuals to diverse perspectives, emerging trends, and valuable mentorship that can accelerate career growth.

More than just gaining credentials, Kyle believes that challenging conventional thinking is key to driving meaningful innovation. Certifications and community involvement push individuals to expand their horizons, rethink existing solutions, and develop a problem-solving mindset that can make a real impact.

Above all, Kyle’s advice is simple: life is short—focus on solving problems that truly matter. By dedicating time and effort to addressing meaningful challenges, professionals can contribute to advancements that shape a better, more sustainable future.

Transitioning to Sustainable Energy Practices

Kyle is enthusiastic about the expanding role of High-Performance Computing (HPC) in revolutionizing the energy and utilities sector. With its ability to deliver scalable and cost-effective solutions, HPC is reshaping the way companies operate, fostering innovation, and driving efficiencies. By leveraging advanced computing power, organizations can optimize resource management, enhance grid reliability, and accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices.

Looking ahead, Kyle envisions cloud technology as a key driver of transformation in the industry. Cloud-based solutions enable breakthroughs in energy efficiency, predictive analytics, and the seamless integration of renewable energy sources. These technologies equip companies with tools to analyze vast amounts of data, anticipate demand fluctuations, and enhance operational resilience.

By embracing cloud technology, the energy sector can address its most pressing challenges, from reducing carbon footprints to improving grid stability. The flexibility and scalability of cloud solutions empower businesses to implement innovative strategies that support a sustainable energy future. Kyle remains optimistic about the industry’s ability to harness these advancements, paving the way for a smarter, more efficient, and environmentally responsible energy landscape.

Building a Culture of Continuous Improvement

Kyle Jones’ leadership philosophy is centered on innovation, collaboration, and service. Here are the key aspects of his approach:

  • Innovation: Technology changes and companies need guidance on how to deliver/create value using new tools. He focuses on building a culture of continuous improvement that encourages his team to explore and adopt emerging technologies that can be useful to their customers—and the customers of their customers.
  • Collaboration: Effective IT strategies bridge technology and business needs. He builds strong partnerships across organizations to align IT initiatives and focus on delivering tangible value to people.
  • Service: IT is a service center that makes the business (and the world) run. When it is great tech, the solution is elegantly invisible.

Kyle has led many digital transformation projects and has learned that success is not in implementing new technologies but in changing mindsets and processes to adopt new working methods. Ideally, technology does the undifferentiated heavy lifting—his goal is to automate away the boring stuff.
