Background-

Linde, the world’s largest industrial gases company, has secured a new long-term agreement to supply ultra-high-purity industrial gases to one of the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturers. The company said it will invest about $1 billion in Arizona to support the deal.

The move comes as semiconductor manufacturers expand capacity to meet rising demand for AI and high-performance computing chips. Investors are watching closely to see whether Linde can turn its growing exposure to the sector into sustained earnings growth.

Under the agreement, Linde will build, own and operate two new air separation units along with related infrastructure. The expansion will increase Linde’s supply of ultra-high-purity nitrogen, oxygen and argon to support two new semiconductor fabrication facilities.

Linde’s Taiwan joint venture also plans to invest about $800 million to supply industrial gases to the same customer’s new semiconductor facilities in Taiwan, extending the partnership beyond the United States.

The investments position Linde to strengthen its role in the semiconductor supply chain as chipmakers worldwide scale up production to meet growing AI infrastructure demand.

The combined investment in Arizona and Taiwan shows Linde’s approach of tracking its major customers into new manufacturing hubs as the global semiconductor industry keeps adding capacity.
