Background
Meta has upgraded Facebook Marketplace, adding social features, collaborative shopping, and stronger Meta AI tools to make the platform more interactive and useful. The update also improves checkout and increases inventory through partnerships with eBay and Poshmark.
A new collections feature lets users group listings and invite friends to join. These shared collections can be kept public or private and can be shared easily through Feed, Messenger, WhatsApp, and other Meta platforms. Meta is also testing collaborative buying, which allows users to bring a friend directly into their chat with a seller. The company says this will help people coordinate purchases, negotiate better prices, and manage pickups more smoothly.
The new social features aim to help groups, such as roommates furnishing an apartment or couples making joint decisions, shop more easily. Meta said these tools also support its strategy of blending social interaction, commerce, and AI to keep users engaged and strengthen Marketplace’s position among e-commerce platforms.
Meta is further expanding AI across Marketplace. Users messaging a seller will now have the option to tap a ‘Suggested questions to ask’ button, which is powered by Meta AI. The system studies the listing and the ongoing chat to offer smart questions that buyers may want to consider. Vehicle listings will also show AI-generated insights, including engine options, safety ratings, seating capacity, reviews, and price comparisons, since cars are among the top search categories for young adults.
The platform is also becoming more social, with users now able to react and comment directly on listings. Meta says this will help buyers learn from others’ experiences and discover better deals.
To improve the buying process, Marketplace will now show full costs upfront, including taxes and shipping, and send order-status notifications.
