OpenAI Launches GPT-5.1 Series for Developers with Faster, Smarter, and Adaptive AI

GPT-5.1

Prime Highlight

  • OpenAI’s new GPT-5.1 models, including Instant and Thinking variants, offer faster responses, better reasoning, and adaptive intelligence based on task complexity.
  • Developers now have more control over reasoning depth, caching prompts for up to 24 hours, and improved coding capabilities through partnerships with AI coding startups.

Key Facts

  • GPT-5.1 models, including gpt-5.1-codex variants, are available on all paid API tiers at the same price as GPT-5.
  • New developer tools include apply_patch for file updates using structured diffs and shell for controlled command-line interactions.

Background

OpenAI now lets developers use its latest GPT-5.1 series of models through the API. The new models, GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking, give faster answers, better reasoning, and follow instructions more accurately.

GPT-5.1 can now change how much it thinks based on the task. This is called adaptive reasoning. For simple tasks, it uses fewer tokens and provides near-instant responses, reducing both time and cost. For complex tasks, the model takes more time to analyse the problem, allowing it to deliver well-reasoned outputs. OpenAI says this improvement will significantly help developers working across varied workflows.

OpenAI now lets prompts stay in cache for up to 24 hours instead of just minutes. This helps developers get faster results on repeated prompts and spend less on the API. Priority Processing customers will also see faster performance than before.

OpenAI is also giving developers more control by allowing them to set the model’s reasoning effort to “none.” This lets developers access GPT-5.1’s intelligence without invoking deep reasoning, offering extremely low-latency outputs.

To enhance coding performance, the company partnered with leading AI coding startups such as Cursor, Cognition, Augment Code, Factory, and Warp. As a result, GPT-5.1 now delivers better coding style, steerability, and accuracy.

Developers are also gaining two new tools: apply_patch, which can create or update files using structured diffs, and shell, which enables controlled command-line interactions.

OpenAI confirmed that GPT-5.1 models, including the new GPT-5.1-Codex variants, are now available on all paid API tiers at the same price as GPT-5.
