Background

American AI company Runway has announced plans to establish London as its European headquarters, committing more than $200 million into the UK’s AI ecosystem by the end of 2028. The move places Runway alongside a growing wave of US technology firms planting deeper roots in the British capital.

The company, which builds world models and offers video generation and editing tools, confirmed the expansion on Monday. World models differ from large language models in that they learn from audio, images, video, and real-world sensory data, rather than focusing primarily on language understanding and generation.

Runway co-founder and Co-CEO Anastasis Germanidis said London brings the company closer to major European clients already working with the platform, including BBC, Fremantle, and WPP. He added that the city’s exceptional talent pool made it the natural starting point, with further European expansion expected in the near future.

The UK’s AI minister Kanishka Narayan welcomed the move, saying Runway’s London hub would bring pioneering world model research to the country and support breakthroughs across industries ranging from film and gaming to science and robotics. He added that the government wants the most ambitious AI firms in the world to build their future in the UK.

Runway most recently raised $315 million in a Series E funding round, backed by General Atlantic, AMD Ventures, and Nvidia, pushing its valuation to $5.3 billion.

The announcement follows similar moves by Anthropic and OpenAI, both of which revealed London expansion plans in April. Google also plans to move staff into a new UK headquarters this summer.
