Background

The collaboration between Block Inc. and Uber Technologies has been extended in order to improve the interaction between restaurant management systems and payment and delivery systems. This has come at a time when the industry is shifting towards computing systems that combine multiple functions within one system.

The deal sees Square POS integration with Uber Eats roll out to several markets outside the U.S., as well as the inclusion of Cash App Pay for Uber’s U.S. operations. The new development aims at making restaurant operations easier by integrating orders, payments, and back office operations.

The new deal has made it unnecessary for restaurants to use different devices for their delivery orders. Orders from Uber Eats will be directly connected to the Square’s POS system. This means that data entry errors will no longer arise, making restaurant operations much easier, especially during busy times.

In addition, instant payments provided by this deal mean better cash flow management. Furthermore, it is expected that the introduction of the Cash App Pay will attract a young clientele who are technology-savvy.

The international expansion will reach Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, France and Spain. This move indicates a shift towards the homogenization of restaurant technology.

Commentators suggest the partnership reflects a shift in the industry where payment, operations and customer engagement are being brought together into a single platform, and is changing the way restaurants approach technology and customers.
